I wanted to give readers another update on my reporting of crime and safety issues in this community.
Since 9/5, I have received only one police report from BPD, an 8/25 disturbance near CU. It is summarized at the bottom of this page (or just click here).
At present, I have requests submitted for approximately 32 additional reports from the Boulder Police Department, for incidents dating back to 7/10. This represents only a small sampling of the noteworthy incidents reported in Boulder during this time frame. (There were many more incidents whose reports I have not requested.)
I’m sharing a few examples below both to show the kinds of incidents I’m trying to follow up on and to give people an idea of how long it is currently taking to obtain basic information about them. These are in chronological order:
7/10:
A woman was arrested for Bias Motivated Harassment. She was back out of jail the next day. This was now over two months ago.
7/11:
A man fled a traffic stop (bike) into a residential neighborhood just after midnight. Multiple officers pursued him and took him into custody. I was asked about this by someone who lives in that neighborhood. I still don’t know the outcome of this call, including whether he was arrested.
7/29:
Another Bias Motivated Harassment, this one in the 1000 block of Arapahoe. This would have been at or near the Boulder Public Library. I don’t know whether anyone was arrested.
7/31:
Sexual Assault-Victim Age 15-17, also in the 1000 block of Arapahoe, at or near the library. I don’t know whether anyone was arrested.
8/8:
Harassment-Ethnic Intimidation in the 1400 block of Walnut. This would have been at or near the downtown bus station. I don’t know if anyone was arrested.
8/16:
A 2nd Degree Assault in the 3000 block of 63rd. I believe this would have been at or near the abandoned building complex on the south side of Valmont Butte. I don’t know whether anyone was arrested.

8/21:
A man arrested for Menacing – Intimidation – Weapon. I believe this was in the area of 15th and Spruce.
=> Note BPD’s call log lists this call disposition as “Report” – not “Arrest.” I believe that a man was arrested.
8/23:
A woman booked on charges of 2nd Degree Assault – Intentionally Causes Bodily Injury – Firefighter/Ems – Gun, Harassment – Strikes/Shoves/Kicks, Resisting Arrest, and Unlawful Use – Ketamine.
=> Per BPD, they had no record of arresting this woman on 8/23.
8/26:
A man arrested who, per his 8/28 court hearing, had been shirtless on the Pearl Street Mall and had threatened to kill people. The judge issued a protection order barring contact with two businesses in the 1100 block of Pearl Street (west end of the mall).
=> Author’s note: live-streaming of Colorado court sessions has been suspended for 90 days (until at least December 14th) due to recurring issues (see article). This was understandable under the circumstances – but also a very significant reduction in transparency in our criminal justice system.
8/30:
A man booked on multiple charges, including three felonies.
=> Per BPD, they had no record of arresting this man on 8/30.
9/1:
A man at the shelter, 4869 Broadway, who was reported possibly trying to light himself on fire in the bathroom. CIRT was called in as well. Per the scanner, nothing was currently on fire, but there was smoke. He was arrested and charged with 4th Degree Arson and Reckless Endangerment. At his court hearing the following day, the judge specified that he was not allowed to have any fire-starting materials.
9/3:
A man arrested after allegedly pulling a knife on a grocery store employee, then later spitting on two jail deputies.
=> This same man was arrested 8/9 (less than a month earlier) after allegedly smashing a storefront window at Broadway and Pearl, then damaging an ATM around the corner with a pick axe, as described in this Reddit post.
9/4:
A woman arrested on charges including Third Degree Assault, Criminal Attempt, Harassment and Resisting Arrest. I believe this was at 47xx Arapahoe, at or near the hospital. At her 9/8 court hearing, the judge ordered her to stay away from the Circle K on Broadway. The hearing indicated that the incident involved an alleged assault on a police officer.
9/5:
A man arrested for Cruelty to Animals and Obstruction. I believe this occurred in the area of 28th and Valmont, and that he was released from jail the same day.
9/5:
A person arrested for felony Menacing (Gun) at a pharmacy near Foothills and Baseline. This was discussed in a now-deleted Reddit post (which still includes the subsequent commentary) and also this post on Nextdoor.
9/6:
A man booked for Theft ($2,000–$4,999), Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance, and an FTA. I believe this call started as a stolen-bike recovery at 13th and Pearl.
=> The same man was arrested in 2023 after a stabbing outside Boulder’s Municipal Building at 1777 Broadway, and was arrested again a few weeks later with more than 23 grams of fentanyl and a stolen bicycle.
9/6:
A Menacing in the 1000 block of Arapahoe. This would have been at or near the main library. No other details available.
9/7:
A man arrested on charges including: Criminal Attempt x2, Identity Theft, Possession Of Drug Paraphernalia, Theft, Unauthorized Use of Financial Trans Device x2, and Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance.
=> He had been arrested just 10 days earlier, on 8/28, on a felony Failure to Comply warrant. In both of these cases, he was back out of jail three days later.
9/9:
A registered sex offender arrested for allegedly touching a random woman at a bus stop without her consent. At his 9/10 court hearing, the prosecutor said he had a history of similar conduct in the same general area.
9/9:
A man arrested after an incident at the Boulder Theater and booked on charges including Second Degree Assault – Serious Bodily Injury to a Peace Officer, Criminal Trespass, Criminal Attempt, and Obstructing a Peace Officer/Firefighter/EMT. At his 9/10 court hearing, the judge referenced multiple people/victims. Per jail records, he was back out the following day.
9/9:
A Harassment-Ethnic Intimidation at 17xx Broadway. This would have been in the area of Mustard’s Last Stand and/or the Muni building.
9/10:
A man arrested after allegedly threatening to stab a stranger, then charging toward him. He was initially booked for felony Menacing With a Weapon and Obstruction; prosecutors later filed misdemeanor charges. At his court hearing on 9/11, the judge ordered him to stay away from the 7-Eleven at Folsom and Valmont.
9/11:
A Public Indecency in the 3100 block of Kings Ridge Blvd. This would have been at or near Christensen Park.
9/11:
Another Bias Motivated Harassment in the 3600 block of Arapahoe. This would have been at or near the Peloton.
The one report I have gotten since 9/5:
8/25
6xx 30th St
10:15 PM
Officers responded regarding a disturbance outside Cosmo’s Pizza, where a crowd of roughly 60–80 students had gathered. A man was reportedly walking through the crowd asking people for money or food. One victim told police the man also approached a group of black men and used racial slurs and threatening language after they refused him. Witnesses said the man had been drinking from small alcohol bottles; police later found discarded bottles in a nearby trash can.
The man approached a mother and her adult son while they were eating outside. After they declined to give him money or food, he allegedly made obscene sexual gestures toward the woman, threatened to stab her while reaching into his pocket as though he had a weapon, got nose-to-nose with her son, and spit alcohol in his face. The woman pepper-sprayed him. She told police the man returned, threatened to kill her and lunged toward her several times, prompting her to spray him again. Multiple witnesses reportedly corroborated the victims’ accounts.
The man was taken to the hospital for the effects of the pepper spray and then arrested. He told police he was intoxicated and had consumed six or seven shots of vodka several hours earlier, but said he could not remember much of the encounter and did not understand why he had been pepper sprayed. No knife was reported recovered. He was booked on felony Menacing and misdemeanor Harassment.
Here’s the official BPD blotter entry from this incident. Note this does not provide any narrative and does not indicate whether anyone was arrested:
