Reporting Update – 7/20/26

I just wanted to update everyone with regard to my reporting on crime and safety issues in this community. I have not been covering much lately – but it’s not for lack of material.

At present, I’ve submitted a total of approximately 32 requests for police reports from the Boulder Police Department, for incidents dating back to 7/1. As of 7/20, I have not gotten a response to any of them.

This is wholly unprecedented. I used to get responses within 2-3 business days, or 4-6 days if the records department had staff on vacation. Since around this past January, that wait time has stretched into 2-3 weeks, and this is normal now.

Below are a few examples of reports I’m waiting for, in chronological order. I should stress, this is just a very small sampling of the criminal activity which I believe happened in Boulder during this time period:

  • 7/1 a man was arrested on charges including Obstructing Government Operations. He was arrested again 7/10 on charges of Obstruction and an FTA. Another man was arrested in the 7/1 case who was also charged with Obstructing Government Operations and had last been arrested on 6/14.
  • 7/1 a man was arrested on charges including Criminal Impersonation and multiple drug charges. He was arrested again on 7/18 on charges including Criminal Impersonation and multiple drug charges.
  • This 7/2 assault at Scott Carpenter Park, where someone on the bike path was cut on the forearm by a suspect who fled. (This was initially reported as a stabbing.) An alert was posted by CU; this alert said there was no ongoing threat to the public even though a suspect was not identified. (BPD did not mention this incident on their X or Facebook accounts.)

  • 7/3 an arrest of one of Boulder’s most prolific bike thieves on multiple charges including Trespassing, Criminal Mischief, Possession of Burglary Tools – (M2), and Theft [$1,000 to < $2,000].
  • 7/5 a man was arrested for Robbery near 27th and Baseline. Per his 7/6 court appearance, he had allegedly stolen someone’s ebike and possibly pulled a knife on the victim. He was charged with two felonies.
  • 7/6 a man was arrested on charges including ​​Unlawful Dist/Man/Disp/Sale/PWID – Amphetamine – Sell > 112 Grams.

    (Possession of 4 grams of meth is a felony in Colorado. In this case, the charge suggests the quantity was at least 112 grams – 28 times that.)
  • 7/8 a man was arrested on charges including Public Indecency. He was arrested again 7/14 on charges including Motor Vehicle Theft.
  • 7/11 a man fled a traffic stop (bike) into a residential neighborhood just after midnight. Multiple officers pursued him and took him into custody. I was asked about this by someone who lives in that neighborhood. I still don’t know the outcome of this call, in particular whether he was actually arrested.
  • 7/14 a daytime robbery in Central Park. Per the court hearing, the suspect and the victim were both staying at the shelter. This suspect had been arrested 6/6 after causing a series of problems around 30th and Arapahoe.
  • 7/14 a man was arrested who had allegedly trespassed into approximately 6 cars in South Boulder and stolen items from several of them. He had a court hearing and got out the following day.
  • 7/14 a party who had reportedly hung himself in downtown Boulder. Per the fire scanner traffic, there was an overdose call at this same approximate location at the exact same time.
  • 7/15 a woman was booked into jail on multiple charges including Theft, Obstruction, Resisting Arrest, and 2nd Assault on a Peace Officer. She was booked under the name “Jane Doe” as she refused to identify herself. Her real name was determined in time for her court appearance and corrected later.

Just clarifying something:

Requesting reports is not the only thing I do. I generally have around 6-8 projects on tap; at any time, I am actively working on around half of those. This includes tasks such as website scraping, data analysis, and process automation – all things I’m bad at but learning. So I am still doing this work; however, it has required a lot of creativity, experimentation, and perseverance.

I emailed Boulder City Council on May 15th with the link to this website (which I had just launched). I also included the link to my origin story.

As of July 20th – now over two months later – no one on council has responded or acknowledged the email.
